Work with Special Needs

Harrogate Skills 4 Living, Harrogate

HS4LC - Reading GroupAs a special educational needs assistant teacher I was specifically employed to work with adults who have special educational needs. I worked with individuals who are physically disabled, sensory impaired (i.e. deaf/blind), have speech and language difficulties such as dyslexia, have a mental disability such as autism, who are emotionally vulnerable, have behavioural difficulties, or have a combination of these disabilities.

A HS4LC client, (Leeds United fan) with shirt supplied by Thompson Events LimitedAs an assistant teacher I also worked with gifted and talented individuals. A key aspect of working in the SEN field is to identify individual needs and be responsible for creating a safe, stimulating and supportive learning environment that enables an adult to succeed in their learning. My brief was to assist in teaching Functional skills, which are practical skills in English, information and communication technology (ICT) and mathematics. They allow individuals to work confidently, effectively and independently in life.

Life Skills

Achievements to date include teaching clients to read who have never read before. Getting client’s to apply maths & English in an everyday environment – ie the HS4LC Cafe & also supplying a signed 2011-2012 Leeds United FC shirt, (with the grateful help of Danny Mills Leeds United & England), for the intention of fund raising within the organisation.
